Neon Shadow going for Schaefer repeat

Bill Hodtwalker|Nov 15, 2001

ANDERSON, Ind. - Neon Shadow bids for a repeat in the $100,000 Michael G. Schaefer Mile Stakes at Hoosier Park Saturday, and he's coming off the same prep race.

Trained by Carl Bowman for owners Tommy and Bonnie Hamilton, Neon Shadow last raced Oct. 12 in the Warfield Stakes at Keeneland where he finished a strong second. Before winning last year's inaugural running, he ran third in the Warfield. Lonnie Meche will ride from post 2.

Typically running on or near the pace, Neon Shadow will find plenty of company this time around. A solid early pace seems likely with the likes of Freon Flier, Two Punch Sonny, and Halshill Road probably looking for the lead.

Freon Flier comes into the Schaefer with five wins from 13 starts this year. A speedy son of Waquoit, Freon Flier has reeled off three straight wins in Kentucky, including the McConnell Springs at Keeneland on Oct. 24. Jon Court will be in to ride from post 5.

Da Devil was unraced in 2000 but returned to post a mark of 2-2-4 from 13 starts this year. A career earner of nearly $900,000, Da Devil appears best suited to pick up the pieces should the speed back up. Trained by Forrest Kaelin, Da Devil was a fast-closing third to Chicago Six and Neon Shadow in the Prairie Meadows Handicap in early August. Terry Thompson has the mount from post 4.

The Schaefer Mile will be run as the third on the 11-race card that gets underway at 6 p.m. The second race will feature a field of 12 in the $70,000-added Indiana Futurity for 2-year-old state-breds going six furlongs.

The Indiana Futurity brings out Peamquid Point to head a field of 12 in the six furlong co-feature. Winner of the Hillsdale Stakes here Oct. 6 for owners Robert Hall and Merrill Scherer, Peamquid Point last raced at Keeneland, where he was a nonthreatening fifth in the 1 1/16-mile Hopemont on the turf.
