Needmore Flattery, Blazing Charcoal win pair of statebred stakes

The favorites delivered in a pair of Ohio-bred turf stakes Sunday at Belterra Park, with Blazing Charcoal wiring the field in the $75,000 Horizon and Needmore Flattery picking up her 11th career stakes victory in the $75,000 Vivacious Handicap.
Blazing Charcoal ($3.80) led his rivals through six furlongs in 1:15.13 in the Horizon, a 1 1/16-mile race for 3-year-olds. In the stretch, he separated from the field for a 2 1/4-length win over Mantua Red. Blazing Charcoal covered the distance on firm ground in 1:47.92.
Rodney Prescott rode the winner for owner-breeder Thorobeam Farm and trainer William D. Cowans. Blazing Charcoal now has won 3 of 6 starts and $87,620.
Needmore Flattery ($4.20) was part of a three-horse entry in the Vivacious, a 1 1/16-mile handicap for fillies and mares in which she was the highweight. She settled off the leaders in the early stages, overtook them in the stretch, and darted clear by 3 3/4 lengths over Hope’s Frog Song. Needmore Flattery covered the distance in 1:46.99.
Luis Colon rode the winner for the partnership of Bruce Ryan and Blazing Meadows Farm, who also bred Needmore Flattery. She is trained by Timothy Hamm. Needmore Flattery now has won 13 of 23 starts and $478,370.
