Naval Power favored in Woodbine Mile, one of three Win and You're Ins on card

Michael Burns Naval Power, second in the Maker's Mark Mile at Keeneland and Turf Classic at Churchill Downs this year, will make his first start in more than four months in the Grade 1 Woodbine Mile.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Naval Power drew post 2 and should be the clear-cut favorite in Saturday’s $1 million Woodbine Mile, a Breeders’ Cup Win and You’re In that has been a successful prep for the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Mile.

Naval Power’s connections - Godophin, trainer Charlie Appleby, and jockey William Buick - are trying to win the Woodbine Mile for the third year in a row, following Master of The Seas and Modern Games. Naval Power has been idle since a narrow loss to Program Trading in the Grade 1 Turf Classic at Churchill Downs on May 4.

With blinkers on, Group 1 winner Big Rock is the lone shipper from Europe in the eight-horse field. Trainer Mark Casse entered Filo Di Arianna, My Boy Prince, and Win for the Money. Rounding out the field are Niagara Skyline, Playmea Tune, and Secret Reserve.

The 28th running of the Woodbine Mile is one of four Grade 1 turf stakes on Saturday’s fabulous 12-race card, one of the best in Woodbine’s history. The Summer and Natalma, both for 2-year-olds, are also Breeders’ Cup Win and You’re In qualifiers, but the $750,000 E.P. Taylor might be the most anticipated race on the program.

Moira and Fev Rover, the last two Canadian Horses of the Year, will clash in the 1 1/4-mile Taylor. Moira edged out the front-running Fev Rover in a gritty display when they met in the Grade 2 Beverly D. at Colonial Downs on Aug. 11.

Both are prepping for the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf at Del Mar, in which Moira wound up third with Fev Rover well back in 11th in last year’s renewal at Santa Anita.
