Naughty Lottie steps up in Prairie Meadows Debutante off debut romp

Naughty Lottie pulled a fast one on her connections last month when she won her career debut by 15 widening lengths.

“We kind of expected her to run big, but not like that,” trainer Justin Jeansonne said. “She just kind of had her ears up, loped around there as if it was a morning workout.”

Jeansonne would not mind another big effort from Naughty Lottie on Friday night, when she faces eight other 2-year-old fillies in the $100,000 Prairie Meadows Debutante.

The field includes Arizona Kalei, who was second by a head in the Prairie Gold Lassie last out at Prairie Meadows, and Kentucky maiden special weight winners Empire of My Own and Somebody’s Problem.

Naughty Lottie debuted July 9 at Louisiana Downs. She was prominent throughout a five-furlong maiden special weight and covered the distance in a hand-timed 58.40 seconds. For the effort, Naughty Lottie earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 71, which is the best last-race number in the Prairie Meadows Debutante.

The daughter of Midnight Lute was a $17,000 purchase at an Ocala Breeders’ Sale Co. auction of 2-year-olds in training. She races for Mike Powers.

“She’s kind of real stout – she kind of looks like her daddy,” Jeansonne said. “She’s been completely straightforward from Day One.”

Naughty Lottie had a nickname of Lottie before being officially named, Jeansonne said. The “Naughty” was added because it not only rhymed, but because she’s been known to pull a fast one at times.

Carlos Lozada, who rode the filly in her debut, has come in from Louisiana Downs for the mount Friday.

“We got here [Monday] afternoon,” Jeansonne said of himself and Naughty Lottie. “She’s a very easygoing filly. She hauled in perfect, was dragging everybody around the shed row. Nothing seemed to faze her.”

Lozada has the mount from post 5.

“I’m thinking it sets up pretty good for her,” Jeansonne said. “Kind of looking at form, most of these fillies go wire to wire, or are up close. She’s been behind horses working. I’d like it if we could just sit right off the pace and finish up down the lane.”

Arizona Kalei will break right inside Naughty Lottie from post 4. The front-runner will be ridden by Ken Tohill.

Arizona Kalei just missed beating Janet Is Ready in the July 8 Prairie Gold Lassie. Janet Is Ready came back in her next start to win the Louisiana Cup Juvenile Fillies at Louisiana Downs and is set to run Friday night in the fillies division of the D.S. “Shine” Young Futurity at Evangeline Downs.

Kevin Eikleberry trains Arizona Kalei for Stable HMA.

Heart of Hanisch was a double-digit debut winner July 25 when she rolled by 11 1/2 lengths in a maiden special weight sprint at Prairie Meadows.

Somebody’s Problem was a 6 3/4-length maiden special weight winner Aug. 7 at Ellis Park.
