ETOBICOKE, Ontario – It will be Godolphin vs. Wathnan when the favored Nations Pride clashes with stablemates Haunted Dream and Silawi in Saturday’s $750,000 Canadian International at Woodbine. Godophin’s Nations Pride won the Grade 1 Canadian International the last time it was contested, in 2023, when the race was run over 1 1/4 miles on the main turf. With the main course currently undergoing renovations, the race in which the great Secretariat made his final career start will be run at 1 1/2 miles around three turns over the inner turf on Saturday. The world traveler Nations Pride competed over an infield course when winning the Grade 1 Saratoga Derby for 3-year-olds in 2022, which was the first of his three Grade/Group 1 scores. The 6-year-old took the Group 2 Singspiel at Meydan on March 1 and is exiting a third in the Grade 1 Sword Dancer at Saratoga. His lone 1 1/2-mile win from four starts at the distance came in the 2022 Jockey Club Derby Invitational at Aqueduct. The 2023 International was Nations Pride’s only race with Lasix and he’s back on the diuretic Saturday. The 19-year-old Irishman Billy Loughnane will ride him for the first time from the outside post 10 for trainer Charlie Appleby, who captured the Grade 1 Woodbine Mile with Godolphin’s Notable Speech three weeks ago. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! DRF Past Performances and Picks are available now. “He has shown huge versatility in Europe, North America, and Dubai,” Appleby said. “He has a great constitution and is very relaxed, which has no doubt contributed to him winning from a mile up to a mile and a half.” Wathnan Racing sends out the English raiders Haunted Dream and Silwa. Haunted Dream is coming off a professional score going 1 3/8 miles here in the Grade 3 Singspiel. In his first race with Lasix, the durable 6-year-old stalked the pace along the rail in the three-turn inner turf tilt before Rafael Hernandez angled him wide for the drive. He kicked in strongly en route to a 1 1/2-length score in a time of 2:15.40, which was .09 second quicker than the previous record over the infrequently carded distance. “He handled the turns good,” Hernandez said. “He’s a very smart horse. You can do anything with him.” Trainer Hamad Al Jehani said Haunted Dream is good to go for the International. “We were planning to give him a break, to be honest,” Al Jehani said. “But after such a great effort in the Singspiel, it gave us confidence to send him back again for the International. It was his first time on the track, and he handled it very well.” Silawi has done the bulk of his damage going 1 1/4 miles, which was the distance over which he won his last race against Group 3 company at Windsor. The 5-year-old has just two other wins on his résumé, including a maiden triumph going about 1 1/2 miles over heavy ground early in his 3-year-old season in France. “He is a very nice horse,” Al Jehani said. “We have always said that Haunted Dream and Silawi are on the same level. We had plans to send Silawi to Bahrain for a Group 3 at the end of October, but we felt it was better to have two horses in this race at Woodbine. We feel Silawi can do well on the tighter Woodbine course.” :: Access morning workout reports straight from the tracks and get an edge with DRF Clocker Reports Saratoga-based Tawny Port is coming off a lucrative second in the Grade 2 Kentucky Turf Cup Invitational going 1 1/2 miles over the undulating course at Kentucky Downs, which was his second runner-up placing there in a week. “He is amazingly consistent and tough,” trainer Miguel Clement said. “He ran two very good races at Kentucky Downs a week apart. Even if he doesn’t win, he always runs a very good race. I expect him to be flying at the end. Tactically speaking, he will not be forwardly placed, so we hope there is some pace up front early.” Trainer Mark Casse entered the trio of My Boy Prince, Raptor’s, and Tosen Wish. Canadian champion My Boy Prince was caught late by favored Notable Speech after setting the pace in the Woodbine Mile and will undoubtedly lead the way again, with Raptor’s in close proximity. Tosen Wish closed for second in the Singspiel, perhaps the best performance of his career. He could be construed as a live longshot. Trainer Rachel Halden sends out the 2024 Breeders’ Stakes victor Roscar and English Actor. The Gail Cox-trained Dancin in Da’nile rounds out the field. Post time for the 11-race card is 1:25 p.m. The Canadian International goes as the ninth race at 5:41 p.m. The supporting features are the Grade 2 Nearctic and the Grade 2 Dance Smartly. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
