SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- For a brief moment, it appeared it would more of the same old, same old at Saratoga in Sunday’s Seeking the Ante Stakes. Trainer Jimmy Jerkens, who Saturday finished one-two in the Travers, and owner Chester Broman, who won the Ballerina on the Travers undercard and seemingly everything else this meet, watched as their impressive maiden winner Hard to Stay Notgo briefly opened up on the field coming to the quarter pole of the 6 1/2-furlong stakes for New York-bred 2-year-old fillies. But brutal early fractions – 21.66 seconds and 45.61 -- had taken their toll on Hard to Stay Notgo, and it wasn’t long before she gave way to the trip-sitting Myfourchix, who opened up in the final furlong to post a three-length victory. “Someone had to stop Jimmy Jerkens train,” quipped trainer Rick Schosberg in the winner’s circle. Despite racing three and four wide much of the race, Cornelio Velasquez kept Myfourchix in solid position while Evrybdymstgetstonz tugged Hard to Stay Notgo through the taxing first half-mile. Hard to Stay Notgo easily put away the pacesetter entering the turn but quickly was set upon by Myfourchix, who was able to get away under an intermittent right-hand stick. :: DRF Live: Get real-time updates and insights from DRF reporters and handicappers at Saratoga each race day The quick early pace gave way to an extremely slow final five-sixteenths of nearly 35 seconds and a glacial final clocking of 1:20.34. Myfourchix was let go at a generous 8-1 mutuel, considering she had run a solid second behind the 3-1 second choice and top Beyer in the race, Nonna Jo. Schosberg contended his filly’s last race was better than it looked and knew she would improve off that effort. “She broke slowly from the rail and had to rush up to get the lead,” said Schosberg. “Junior [Alvarado] said after the race he didn’t think [Nonna Jo] would beat us again.” Nonna Jo finished another 10 1/4 lengths back in third. Ironically, Alvarado got off Myfourchix to ride Hard to Stay Notgo, who went off as the 7-10 favorite. Myfourchix paid $19.60 as the fifth choice in the six-horse field. She combined with Hard to Stay Notgo for a $40.40 exacta. Schosberg said Myfourchix would get a little time to recover from the Seeking the Ante and would be brought back Oct. 18 for the Maid of the Mist on Empire Showcase Day at Belmont Park.
