My Gal Betty on target for Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – My Gal Betty is on target for the Nov. 2 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Churchill after working to trainer Roger Attfield’s satisfaction last Sunday. In company with Final Copy, she breezed five-eighths in 1:00.40 over the turf training course at Woodbine.
“She’s doing great,” Attfield said. “She had a beautiful little easy breeze [Sunday] morning. She’ll have a stiffer work next weekend.”
My Gal Betty wound up second in her last start here Sept. 16 in the Grade 1 Natalma, a one-turn turf mile. Attfield scratched her from the Oct. 10 Jessamine Stakes at Keeneland after she drew post 13 in the Grade 2 turf route. He said he regretted not running her around two turns on the Tapeta in the Grade 3 Mazarine here Oct. 6.
“It just got messed up,” Attfield said. “I wasn’t happy about the post position in the first place. The biggest mistake I made was I set my mind on running around the inside turf course at Keeneland. But she worked okay around Payson Park, which is much tighter than Keeneland. I set my mind on that, so I totally didn’t look at the Mazarine, which would have been the race for her, and then go on. Now, I have to train her up to the [Breeders’ Cup], but I’m fine training her to it anyway.”
Code Warrior ready to go again
Code Warrior, a leading contender for the Sovereign Award as this year’s Canadian champion female sprinter, is aiming for the Grade 3 Ontario Fashion here Oct. 28. A two-time Grade 3 stakes winner at the meet, she went too fast up front before fading to seventh most recently in the Grade 2 Presque Isle Downs Masters.
“She worked good the other day,” trainer Mike DePaulo said. “We’re ready to get her back on her home track.”
DePaulo is excited about She Calls It, a 2-year-old daughter of Giant Gizmo who won her maiden comfortably last Saturday in an Ontario-sired sprint. In her only other outing, she was disqualified and placed fifth for interference after crossing the line on top by 6 1/4 lengths on Sept. 16.
She Calls It is nominated to the $225,000 Princess Elizabeth for Canadian-breds here Nov. 4, but will likely start next in another 1 1/16-mile stakes, the $100,000 South Ocean for Ontario-sired fillies on Nov. 17. DePaulo said jockey Jesse Campbell is adamant that she wants to go long.
“That’s the first thing the jock said to me when he got off her,” DePaulo said. “Being by Giant Gizmo and out of a Smart Strike mare, she has a license to do anything.”
◗ Nine fillies and mares were entered in Friday’s feature, a nonwinners-of-three turf sprint for Ontario-sired allowance types and $40,000 claimers.
