My Boy Tate surges in stretch, takes Hudson Stakes
RACE REPLAY IS NOT AVAILABLE
My Boy Tate shot to the lead in the stretch and went on to a 2-length win over Who Hoo That’s Me in the $150,000 Hudson on Sunday at Belmont at the Big A.
The 6 1/2-furlong race was one of eight stakes run as New York Showcase Day. The Hudson was for 3-year-olds and up over 6 1/2 furlongs. It’s counterpart, the $150,000 Iroquois, was won in an upset by November Rein ($40).
My Boy Tate ($15.20), an 8-year-old making his third start off a layoff, tracked pacesetter Wudda U Think Now through fractions of 22.77 seconds for the opening quarter and 46.27 for the half-mile. My Boy Tate surged to the fore in the stretch and covered the distance on a fast track in 1:16.37.
Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. was aboard the winner for trainer Michelle Nevin.
"I rode him with confidence,” Ortiz told the publicity office for the New York Racing Association. “Michelle said he was ready, so that’s what I did.”
Nevin co-owns My Boy Tate with Little Red Feather Racing and also is the breeder of the horse by Boys At Tosconova.
“He loves Aqueduct,” Nevin said of My Boy Tate. “He’s happiest here. I have his mom, she’s one of my mares. She was always a sweetheart and I really liked her. And I used to gallop Boys At Tosconova. I just thought it was a good match. He’s like my grandson, pretty much.”
My Boy Tate was winning his sixth stakes race Sunday. Overall, he is 11 for 35 for earnings of $812,288.
November Rein darted to a 1 1/4-length win over Bank Sting in the Iroquois. It was another half-length back in third to Secret Love.
November Rein raced just off fractions of 22.30 for the opening quarter and 45.49 for the half-mile before covering 6 1/2furlongs on a fast track in 1:17.35.
Trevor McCarthy was aboard for trainer Kelly Breen.
“She broke a little slower than I would have liked.” McCarthy told NYRA. “Her second, third or fourth stride is usually better for her. Once she got herself underneath of her, she put herself in a nice, tactical spot just a few lengths off the lead. She liked the clean trip. I just left her out there and made a middle move with her. If they were going to beat me, they were going to beat me. They have to come get me. It was a good effort by her.”
November Rein was coming off a sixth-place finish in the Grade 1 Test in August at Saratoga. The winner of the race, Chi Town Lady, and the runner-up, Hot Peppers, were both pre-entered in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint.
November Rein is a daughter of Street Boss who races for Mr. Amore Stable. She was bred by Ron Lombardi.
