ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Reigning Canadian champion male 2-year-old My Boy Prince solidified his status as the early King’s Plate favorite with another authoritative score under Sahin Civaci in Sunday’s $125,000 Queenston Stakes at Woodbine.
My Boy Prince attended the pace before going on to an easy win in the May 19 King Corrie Stakes, for which he got a big 97 Beyer Speed Figure. He was a little more forward in the seven-furlong Queenston and emerged with a slim lead after a slow opening quarter.
My Boy Prince put away Babbo on the turn and then drew off to prevail by 4 1/2 lengths over his Mark Casse-trained stablemate Essex Serpent, who had rallied inside from seventh. No More Options finished another head back in third and was followed by Western Whirl, Junior Hot Shot, Roscar, Babbo and Highland Blue.
Civaci said My Boy Prince is among the best horses he’s been on in competition.
“There’s many horses I’ve ridden that were really good," Civaci said. “So far, he’s right up there. Hopefully, in the King’s Plate, he’ll show me.”
My Boy Prince ($2.70) covered the distance in 1:21.90. The son of Cairo Prince banked $75,000 for last year’s Sovereign Award-winning owner Gary Barber.
The $1 million King’s Plate for Canadian-bred 3-year-olds goes Aug. 17 at Woodbine.
