My Boy Jack, winner of the Southwest Stakes, and Bravazo and Snapper Sinclair, the one-two finishers from the Risen Star Stakes, head the 10-horse field of 3-year-olds entered Saturday for the $1 million Louisiana Derby on March 24 at Fair Grounds. My Boy Jack skimmed a wet-track golden rail en route to victory in the Southwest, and rather than run his horse back at Oaklawn Park, trainer Keith Desormeaux elected to switch paths onto Fair Grounds’ road to the Kentucky Derby. Desormeaux is a Louisiana native who wintered at Fair Grounds before moving his operation to California, from which My Boy Jack will ship. Desormeaux is looking for his first Louisiana Derby win, but the trainers of Bravazo and Snapper Sinclair, who were separated by a nose Feb. 17 at Fair Grounds in the Risen Star, both have multiple wins in the race. Steve Asmussen, Snapper Sinclair’s trainer, has three Louisiana Derby wins, most recently with Gun Runner in 2016. Bravazo is trained by Wayne Lukas, who won his first Louisiana Derby in 1983 with Balboa Native, and his second in 1996 with Grindstone, who went on to win the Kentucky Derby. :: Just reduced! Save on The Road to the Kentucky Derby Player's Package Snapper Sinclair and Bravazo both have new jockeys for the Louisiana Derby. Snapper Sinclair’s connections have replaced Adam Beschizza with Jose Ortiz, while Miguel Mena broke his ankle and heel in a Thursday spill and is unable to take the mount back on Bravazo, giving way to Gary Stevens. Stevens was named on Bravazo when entries were taken for the Risen Star but stayed at Oaklawn to ride Streamline to victory in the Bayakoa Stakes, leaving the ride to Mena.  Risen Star third-place finisher Noble Indy will ship back from Florida for trainer Todd Pletcher, another three-time Louisiana Derby winner, most recently with Revolutionary in 2013. Pletcher and Asmussen also have second runners in the race. Pletcher starts Hyndford, who finished second to stablemate Magnum Moon last out in a Tampa Bay Downs allowance. Asmussen runs Retirement Fund, who easily won maiden and allowance route races at Fair Grounds this winter before finishing a distant seventh in the Southwest. Givemeaminit was eighth in the Risen Star, but at age 2 finished second in the Grade 1 Hopeful and fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile for Dallas Stewart, another trainer with a Louisiana Derby win. Dark Templar makes his stakes debut after a solid if unspectacular local allowance victory, while Lone Sailor was a non-factor in the Lecomte, his most recent stakes start. Marmello, the last of the 10, has some ability but is merely a twice-started maiden. Marmello was cross-entered in a maiden race on the Saturday card. Pletcher told Fair Grounds publicity that a final decision on Hyndford’s participation will be made Tuesday, when the colt would have to board a New Orleans-bound plane. Hyndford had been aimed at the Sunland Derby, but Pletcher said Sunland officials informed him that as of today Hyndford would be an also-eligible for that race. If the situation remains unchanged Tuesday, Hyndford will come to Fair Grounds. The Louisiana Derby was changed from 1 1/16 miles to its current 1 1/8 miles in 2010, and Fair Grounds dirt races at that distance start in midstretch, allowing the field to sort itself out to a great degree before hitting the clubhouse turn. As a closer, My Boy Jack figures to drop back and look for position in any case, so post 9 shouldn’t much hurt him. Dark Templar has shown stalking tendencies and could face a wide journey from the outside draw. Bravazo has tactical pace and with luck can work out a decent trip from the rail. The Louisiana Derby will be run as race 11, one of eight stakes and 14 races total, on a March 24 card that starts at 12:30 p.m. Central. Post time for the local derby is 5:21. The race is a major qualifier on Churchill Downs’s Road to the Kentucky Derby, offering 170 qualifying points distributed 100-40-20-10 to the first four finishers. Bravazo already has 54 points, the third-highest total as of Saturday morning, while Snapper Sinclair is 11th with 22 points. My Boy Jack has 12 points, and Noble Indy has 10. The early weather forecast doesn’t call for rain after Monday next week, and predicts cloudy weather with a high of 78 degress on March 24. Here’s the full field in post position order with morning-line odds and jockeys: 1) Bravazo 7-2 - Gary Stevens 2) Noble Indy 7-2 - John Velazquez 3) Marmello 50-1 - Jack Gilligan 4)  Givemeaminit 20-1 - Javier Castellano 5) Retirement Fund 12-1 - Shaun Bridgmohan 6)  Hyndford 8-1 - Joe Bravo 7) Snapper Sinclair 9-2 - Jose Ortiz 8)  Lone Sailor 20-1 - James Graham 9) My Boy Jack 5-2 - Kent Desormeaux 10) Dark Templar 12-1 - Florent Geroux
