Mutuel field 3-5 in Pool 1 of Kentucky Derby Futures Wager
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The mutuel field, the No. 24 or “all others” option, closed Sunday as the favorite in Pool 1 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager and in the Sire futures offered for the first time this year by Churchill Downs.
The field is 3-5 in Pool 1 and 2-1 in the Sire wager.
Both pools opened Thursday for a four-day run. A big bet was made early that day on the field in Pool 1, and the odds never rose higher than 3-5. The top individual choices are Nyquist at 9-1, Moyahmen at 11-1, Swipe at 18-1, and Airoforce at 18-1.
In the Sire wager, the top individual choices are Tapit at 7-1, Uncle Mo at 9-1, Bernardini at 11-1, and Curlin at 14-1.
Total handle on Pool 1 was $174,682, with $141,926 to win and $32,756 in exactas. On the Sire wager, total handle was $34,960, with $26,751 to win and $8,209 in exactas.
Together, the two wagers handled $209,642. Last year, handle on Pool 1 alone was $234,574.
This was the third year Churchill has offered Pool 1 at the end of November. Before then, only three pools were offered annually, typically starting in February.
The field has been favored in Pool 1 every year since Churchill began offering parimutuel futures in 1999. Last year, American Pharoah emerged as a 12-1 chance in Pool 1 to sweep the Triple Crown.
As usual, three subsequent futures pools will be offered before the 142nd Derby is run May 7, 2016: Pool 2 will run Feb. 12-14, Pool 3 from March 11-13, and Pool 4 from April 1-3. A separate Kentucky Oaks pool will be offered concurrent with Pool 3.
Aggregate handle on the four Derby pools last year was $1,522,976. The record is $1,665,990, set in 2005.
