Murphy, Maryland trainer, dies

Jimmy Murphy, a longtime trainer based on the Maryland circuit, died Saturday at age 82.

In a career that began in 1965, Murphy was credited with at least 1,381 winners and earnings of more than $24.2 million by Equibase, the Thoroughbred racing data collection agency, and had more than 50 stakes winners. Murphy was named trainer of the year by the Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association in 2006.
