Multiplier euthanized after injury in Tokyo City Cup

Multiplier, winner of the Grade 3 Illinois Derby at Hawthorne in 2017 and runner-up in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap in 2020, was euthanized as a result of an injury sustained in Sunday’s Grade 3 Tokyo City Cup, according to California Horse Racing Board records.

Multiplier was last in a field of five when he was abruptly pulled up by jockey Ruben Fuentes on the turn. A 7-year-old gelding, Multiplier won 4 of 37 starts. He was claimed for $50,000 in February by trainer Andrew Lerner and had his third start for the stable in the Tokyo City.

Multiplier was the second horse euthanized as a result of an injury sustained in a race at Santa Anita over the weekend. My Child Sbud could not be saved after being pulled up in the stretch of a $16,000 claimer for sprinters on Saturday, according to the racing board.
