Multiple graded stakes winner Con Lima dies in stall accident

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Con Lima, a multiple graded stakes-winning turf filly in 2021, had to be euthanized after suffering catastrophic injuries in a stall accident, her connections said Thursday.
According to Aron Wellman, president of Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, part-owner of the filly, Con Lima was at WinStar Farm in Kentucky where she had recently resumed training after a lengthy break. Wellman said a night watchman found Con Lima down in her stall.
“It became apparent she had suffered an irreparable injury,” Wellman said. “It was a pretty black and white situation, unfortunately.”

Con Lima was trained by Todd Pletcher. A daughter of Commissioner, Con Lima was bred in Texas by Lisa Kuhlmann.
Con Lima had an overall record of 7-5-0 from 13 starts and she earned $884,865. In 2021, she won four stakes, including the Saratoga Oaks, Wonder Again and Herecomesthebride – all Grade 3 events. She was runner-up to Santa Barbara in the Grade 1 Belmont Oaks in July.
“Most of these big races are dominated by purple-blooded horses owned by moguls, which is great,” Wellman said. “She was sort of a throwback, an iron filly in the sense that she had an incredible constitution and run at the highest level for so long. She came from humble beginnings – a Texas-bred daughter of Commissioner. To make her way to New York and to win the Wonder Again and run second in the Belmont Oaks to Santa Barbara was just incredible.”
In addition to Eclipse, her owners included Joseph Graffeo, and Eric Nikolaus Del Toro and Troy Johnson.
