Ms. Battlefield, Poker Run meet in CTBA Lassie
Ms. Battlefield and Poker Run are the lone winners in a field of seven juvenile fillies for the $40,000 Colorado Thoroughbred Breeders Association Lassie at Arapahoe Park on Saturday. The race restricted to Colorado-breds will be run over six furlongs. Other leading contenders include:
• Lightning Lady, who was second to Poker Run in a trial race June 28.
• Special Task, a full sister to multiple stakes winner Sorta Special.
• Crazy Cora, who could threaten with a repeat of her debut effort June 1.
Ms. Battlefield should go favored for her 2-for-2 record. She has won both of her races at Arapahoe, using stalking tactics to defeat open company in a maiden special weight race June 15, then rolling by 5 1/2 lengths in a trial June 28. Ms. Battlefield is a January foal by Oliver’s Twist, a Grade 3 winner who earned $508,915. Russell Vicchrilli has the mount from post 5 for co-breeder Sandra Kutz and trainer Kim Oliver.
Poker Run could be showing the way after wiring a field of trial rivals over a muddy track at Arapahoe on June 28. She won by 4 3/4 lengths under Luis Rodriguez, who has the mount again Saturday from post 2. Butch Gleason trains Poker Run for P and S Racing Stables.
