Mrs. Astor retired, bred to Upstart

The six-time stakes winner Mrs. Astor was recently retired and bred to Upstart, trainer Jonathan Thomas said earlier this month.

A 6-year-old mare, Mrs. Astor won 8 of 24 starts and earned $649,472 for owner and breeder George Strawbridge, Jr.’s Augustin Stable. By Lookin at Lucky, Mrs. Astor thrived in distance turf races for fillies and mares in Southern California.

Beginning in the fall of 2024, she won six turf stakes in a span of eight starts at Del Mar and Santa Anita, including the Grade 3 Red Carpet Stakes at 1 3/8 miles at Del Mar in 2024 and last November.

“She’s been as good as a horse can be for us,” Thomas said.

Earlier this year, Mrs. Astor won the Astra Stakes at 1 1/2 miles at Santa Anita in January, her final stakes win. She was third by a length in the Grade 3 Santa Ana Stakes at Santa Anita in March and fifth of eight in the Grade 3 Bewitch Stakes at Keeneland on April 24.

Mrs. Astor was bred earlier this month, Thomas said.

“We want to make sure she gets kicked off in her second career,” he said.
