Mr. Wireless done for year, will return as 4-year-old

Mr. Wireless emerged from the Oklahoma Derby with a minor physical setback and will return to the races next year at 4, according to his trainer, Bret Calhoun.
Mr. Wireless finished an uncharacteristic fifth in last month’s Grade 3, $400,000 race at Remington Park and was found to have a small bone chip in one of his knees. Prior to the Oklahoma Derby he won back-to-back stakes, taking the Grade 3 Indiana Derby in July and the Grade 3 West Virginia Derby in August.
“He ended up with a chip in a knee,” Calhoun said. “It wasn’t much. We took it out. We’ll give him 90 days off.”
Calhoun said Mr. Wireless is based in Kentucky. The horse debuted in March and has closed out his first season of racing with a 4-for-7 record for earnings of $682,150.
“He had a great 3-year-old year,” Calhoun said. “The fact that this is pretty minor, I think he’ll come back as good, or better, than ever.”
Mr. Wireless is owned by Jon Lapczenski and JIL Stable. He won his maiden at Oaklawn over Stilleto Boy, who would go on to win the Iowa Derby and run second in the Grade 1 Awesome Again at Santa Anita.
