Mr Havercamp gets it done in Autumn Stakes

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Mr Havercamp ($3.80) got the job done comfortably in Saturday’s Grade 2 Autumn Stakes at Woodbine, after a dream trip in the 1 1/16-mile route.

Decorated Soldier and Shakhimat hooked up in a speed duel, and they went the half in a rapid 47.44 seconds before the latter assumed command. After a three-wide stalking trip, Mr Havercamp hit the front at the quarter pole and then drew clear to prevail by 1 3/4 lengths over the classy Are You Kidding Me.

Gigantic Breeze rallied wide for third, and Florida Won checked in fourth in a field reduced to seven after the scratches of Lookin to Strike and Giant Storm.

Mr Havercamp, who covered the distance in 1:42.36 under Eurico Da Silva, was coming off a second in the Grade 1 Woodbine Mile on the grass Sept. 15.

“He’s a tough, resilient horse,” said trainer Catherine Day Phillips. “We gave him a break after the Woodbine Mile. We just jogged him for a couple of weeks, and he came to hand very quickly for this race, to be honest. I was really confident in him. He was training so well.”

Mr Havercamp, a 4-year-old Court Vision gelding, earned $126,000 of the $200,550 purse for owners Sean and Dorothy Fitzhenry.
