Mr. Buff likely for Jazil Stakes

If it’s not broke, don’t break it.

That’s the ideology trainer John Kimmel plans to utilize with Mr. Buff, who will likely make his next start in the $100,000 Jazil Stakes at Aqueduct on Jan. 26. The Jazil is a two-turn, 1 1/8-mile race run over Aqueduct’s main track. Mr. Buff has won three consecutive two-turn, 1 1/8-mile races run over Aqueduct’s main track, including Saturday’s $100,000 Alex M. Robb Stakes. Overall, he is 4 for 4 in 1 1/8-mile races run around two turns.

In the Robb, Mr. Buff took over from Black Tide about 5 1/2 furlongs from home and was able to outfinish Twisted Tom to win by a nose. It was Mr. Buff’s first career stakes win and his seventh victory from 25 starts overall. Mr. Buff is a New York-bred gelding by Friend or Foe owned and bred by Chester and Mary Broman.

“He’s gotten to be much better at the lead changes going two turns, he gets it down now,” Kimmel said from South Florida. “I thought he was going to run away with it, but Twisted Tom came back with a really good late effort. That scared me. I was screaming at the TV and the two dogs leaped off the sofa like ‘what’s going on?’ ”

Mr. Buff has taken advantage of the New York Racing Association’s starter loyalty program. The Robb was Mr. Buff’s 11th start at a NYRA track since April 6, making him a platinum member, meaning he earned an additional 12.5 percent purse money. If he runs again before March 31, he will become a diamond member and run for 15 percent more money.
