Mowins, Climber dominate divisions of Hoosier Breeders Sophomore Stakes

Favored Mowins and longshot Climber won the two divisions of the Hoosier Breeders Sophomore Stakes by wide margins Wednesday night at Horseshoe Indianapolis.
Mowins ($7) pressed pacesetting Oro Azteca, took over before the quarter pole, and drew clear under Jon Court to win the $103,500 open division of Hoosier Breeeders Sophomore, open to Indiana-bred 3-year-olds. Mowins, bred by Michael and Penny Lauer, owned by Penny Lauer and Clary Thoroughbreds, and trained by Michael Lauer, won by 5 1/4 lengths over Mr Chaos. Latigo was a distant third as the three shortest prices in a 12-horse field formed the trifecta.
Mowins, winning for the fourth time in eight starts, is a son of Mohaymen and Prize Winner, by Pure Prize. He was timed in 1:45.65 for 1 1/16 miles on a fast dirt track.
Climber ($25.60) was a 5 1/2-length winner of $102,500 fillies division, easily beating 9-5 favorite Louder Than Words. Climber, Manny Esquivel riding for trainer Genaro Garcia and owners Bruce Murphy and Southwest Racing Stable, was timed in 1:46.26 for the 1 1/16 miles and has improved dramatically at age 3 after losing her four starts in 2021 by more than 76 combined lengths.
Climber, bred by Dawn Martin, is by Divining Rod out of Gazeley, by First Defence.
