Mountaineer track report

The photo-finish camera was needed to determine two of the three stakes races on Tuesday night's pre-holiday program at Mountaineer Park in Chester, W. Va. And even the electronic eye could not separate the first two finishers in one race.

Locally based On to Richmond, allowed to set a slow pace of 48.38 seconds for the half-mile and 1:11.97 for six furlongs, just lasted for a dead heat with Delaware Park invader Buenos Dias in the $79,250 Independence Day Handicap. Both hit the wire in 1:36.20 for one mile on firm turf.

On to Richmond ($8), ridden by Scott Spieth and trained by Tim Girten, has now won five of his last six starts at Mountaineer, including a track record effort for seven furlongs on the turf, 1:21.40, in an allowance race on June 16.

Buenos Dias ($4.40), an 8-year-old trained by Lawrence Murray and ridden by Harry Vega, has won two of his last three starts, including last summer's $100,000 Pennsylvania Governor's Cup at Penn National.

The other tight finish came in the six-furlong, $78,000 Mountain State Handicap on dirt, where Dash for Daylight ($7.40) raced in tandem with Jeanies Rob throughout the stretch and just got up by a neck in a swift 1:08.77.

Dash for Daylight, a 5-year-old trained by Elliott Walden and ridden by Larry Melancon, was able to win despite stumbling at the start. Jeanies Rob won last year's Mountain State by a head.

In the one-mile, $75,000 Firecracker Handicap for fillies and mares, Caught Out ($5.80) steadied briefly behind a wall of horses before she found an opening and rallied for her fourth straight victory, all at different tracks. Ridden by Eddie King for trainer Michael Dickinson, Caught Out finished a half-length ahead of The Goddess Athird in 1:36.41 on turf.
