Mountaineer track report

A pair of Thoroughbred senior citizens helped generate a $4,691 superfecta in Monday's fifth race at Mountaineer Park.

Victory Tower ($20), a 12-year-old gelding trained by octogenarian Elmer Damron, led wire to wire to win the six-furlong sprint for $4,000 claimers by 3 1/4 lengths. It was Victory Tower's 30th lifetime victory in 165 starts and his 24th win at Mountaineer.

Out for Gold, a 12-year-old making the 168th start of his long career, finished third in the race at 8-1 odds. He has won 32 lifetime races and more than $300,000, but is just 1 for 44 in his career at Mountaineer.

* Westerly ($7.40) won his second straight race at Mountaineer last Saturday in a starter allowance route for $5,000 horses that carried a purse of $24,900. The 7-year-old Westerly earned an 89 Beyer Speed Figure, one point less than he posted winning a mile race at this track in February.

Penn National-based trainer Harry Thompson is now 5 for 10 at the meet with runners he has shipped to West Virginia.

The solid field Westerly beat by two lengths included 19-time winner Hagor, who came into the race as winner of five of his last six; Pride of Benray, an 18-time winner from Penn National, and Pilot Pine, who has 22 career wins, including four in a row in starter allowances at Charles Town last fall.
