Mountaineer cancels after fourth race Wednesday due to report of shooting in area
Mountaineer Park in West Chester, W.Va., canceled its race card after four races had been run on Wednesday night due to reports of an active shooter in a town nearby.
Local news stations had reported that police issued an “active shooter” alert around 8 p.m., after a resident of Hancock County had been shot about seven miles away from the track.
Mountaineer Park ran its fourth race at 8:10 p.m., and then canceled the remainder of the card after police issued a warning for residents to stay indoors.
Peter Berry, the track’s announcer, said on Twitter late on Wednesday night that racing had been canceled “out of an abundance of caution.”
One person was reported dead, while three others were injured.
