Moulin de Mougin retired
DEL MAR, Calif. – Moulin de Mougin, who won the Grade 2 John C. Mabee Stakes at Del Mar in 2014 and three other races in a 16-race career, has been retired because of concern over the condition of an ankle, trainer Richard Mandella said.
Moulin de Mougin left Mandella’s barn at Del Mar on Thursday for owners Jan Van de Bos and Robert Naify’s property in central California.
Moulin de Mougin ended her career with earnings of $313,660. The Mabee was her most prestigious win. She finished sixth in the Grade 1 Gamely Stakes at Santa Anita in May in her final start. Moulin de Mougin was in training at Del Mar in July before the ankle injury surfaced.
“She had an ankle that was starting to bother her,” Mandella said. “She’s done plenty. We didn’t want to get her hurt.”
Mandella said Moulin de Mougin will stay with her owners in the coming months before being sent to Kentucky to be bred in 2016. Moulin de Mougin is by Curlin out of Cambiocorsa, a five-time stakes winner who earned $522,055. Cambiocorsa has produced three stakes winners, including Schiaparelli, who earned $274,184, and Alexis Tangier, who has earned $161,950.
