Moreno, Derby-winning rider, dies at 77

Steve Andersen|Feb 02, 2007

Jockey Henry Moreno, who rode Dark Star to an upset win in the 1953 Kentucky Derby, died Thursday in Florence, Ore., at age 77, according to his brother, Pete.

Moreno had battled pancreatic cancer.

Moreno had six stakes wins at Santa Anita, including the 1957 Santa Anita Derby aboard Sir William.

In his most famous win, in the 1953 Kentucky Derby, Moreno's mount was dismissed at 24-1 in a field of 11. Dark Star held off a late rally from Native Dancer to win by a head. Dark Star was owned by Cain Hoy Stable and trained by Eddie Hayward. The Kentucky Derby was Native Dancer's only loss in 22 races.

Funeral services will be private, Pete Moreno said.
