More Power to Him closes strong to win Mount Rainier Stakes
More Power to Him came from well back to beat El Huerfano in the $50,000 Mount Rainier Stakes on Sunday at Emerald Downs. He paid $10.20. The 1 1/16-mile race for 3-year-olds and up was the final local prep for the Grade 3, $200,000 Longacres Mile on Aug. 11 and anchored an all-stakes pick four that paid $961.70 for a 50-cent ticket.
It was the third win and second stakes victory on the day for jockey Kevin Orozco.
Breaking from the outside post in the eight-horse field, More Power to Him stayed outside while settling near the back of the pack early. He started to make his presence known midway on the second turn, continued his move going four wide coming out of the turn, and got up in the last few jumps to edge El Huerfano, who had dueled with Oh Marvelous Me from the quarter pole, by 1 1/2 lengths. Oh Marvelous Me finished third.
“He wasn’t comfortable with the dirt hitting him early,” Orozco said. “Once I got him outside, he settled down and he just went around them on the second turn.”
The final time was 1:42.62.
More Power to Him is trained by Taylor Faith. The 5-year-old horse by Slew’s Tiznow was bred in California by his owner, Brett Mason.
No Talking Back takes Boeing Stakes
No Talking Back took advantage of a fast and contested pace to win the $50,000 Boeing Stakes for fillies and mares. She paid $23.20 for her hard-fought, three-quarter-length victory over Paddy’s Secret.
Scott Stevens was aboard No Talking Back who saved ground early while being reserved off the pace. She moved into contention from along the rail on the second turn, moved off the rail in midstretch, and wore down Paddy’s Secret late. Blazinbeauty rallied to finish third.
The final time was 1:43.32.
No Talking Back is trained by Chris Stenslie and is owned by One Horse Will Do Corp. and Steve Shimuzo. One Horse Will Do Corp. also bred the 5-year-old daughter of Flatter.
Show Me the Mints scores in King County Express
Heavily favored Show Me the Mints was a decisive four-length front-running winner over Haveulostyourmind in the $50,000 King County Express Stakes for 2-year-olds. Ridden by Orozco for trainer Frank Lucarelli, the Washington-bred son of Coast Guard paid $3.40 and posted a final time of 1:05.42 for 5 1/2 furlongs.
He is owned by Billy Speed Racing Stable.
For You Only upsets Angie C.
Jennifer Whitaker guided For You Only to an upset victory over Windy Point in the $50,000 Angie C. for 2-year-old fillies. She paid $25.60.
A Washington-bred daughter of Abraaj, For You Only came from a stalking position to edge Windy Point by 1 3/4 lengths in the 5 1/2-furlong dash.
The final time was 1:05.18.
She is trained by Howard Belvoir and races for Too Pegasus, Dixie Hitchcock, and David Matsumoto.
The race was marred when Informed Lady fell in midstretch. She was vanned off. Jockey Heribert Martinez walked off on his own power and came back to ride Concur, who set the pace in the Mount Rainier.
