More Than Most is headed to trainer Bret Calhoun’s division at Churchill Downs after establishing herself as a 3-year-old filly of note at Lone Star Park. She won her second straight stakes race of the season last Saturday night, when she defeated older rivals in the $50,000 Lane’s End Stallion Scholarship Stakes. The effort came following a 7 1/4-length romp in a division of the $75,000 Texas Stallion Stakes on May 15. For that effort, she earned a career-high Beyer Speed Figure of 86. More Than Most was assigned an 82 Beyer for the Lane’s End, which was restricted to fillies and mares bred in Texas. “We’re going to send her to Kentucky,” said Calhoun, who trains More Than Most for Doug Scharbauer. “There’s not really anything for her down there in that part of the country right now. We’ll point at the Ta Wee at Indiana. We will nominate her to the Indiana Oaks, just watch and see who’s coming. More than likely, she’ll end up in the Ta Wee. But we will nominate to both of those races.” The Grade 2, $200,000 Indiana Oaks at 1 1/16 miles on dirt goes July 16. The $100,000 Ta Wee for 3-year-old fillies at a mile on turf is July 20. Both races are at Indiana Grand. More Than Most won the Texas Stallion on dirt and the Lane’s End on turf. Earlier in her career, she captured the La Senorita on turf at Retama Park. “I don’t think the surface makes any difference to her at all at this point,” Calhoun said. “Right now, it’s a good thing she’s versatile. It helps you find races. But she really hasn’t shown to be better on either surface. It’s mental maturity with her more than anything.” Calhoun said More Than Most has long shown talent in her training and over the past several months has been putting it all together in her races. Tagg, Van Berg at Lone Star Kentucky Derby-winning trainers Barclay Tagg and Jack Van Berg will be at Lone Star on Friday night to be part of a fundraiser for Remember Me Rescue. The organization retrains retired racehorses for new careers. Tagg will be the keynote speaker, and Van Berg will serve as auctioneer. Tickets are $95.
