More Than Most being considered for Golden Rod
Doug Scharbauer and trainer Bret Calhoun appear to have a quality two-turn filly on their hands in More Than Most, who is being considered for next month’s Grade 2 Golden Rod at Churchill Downs. She won her second straight race last Saturday in the La Senorita Stakes at Retama Park, where she covered a mile on turf quicker than her male counterparts in that night’s El Joven Stakes.
“Right now, we don’t know what we’re going to do,” said Calhoun.
Calhoun has long wanted two turns for More Than Most, a maiden special weight winner at Churchill Downs who made her two-turn debut in the La Senorita. More Than Most was a 4 1/2-length winner in 1:37.54, earning a career-high Beyer Speed Figure of 75.
Calhoun said the Golden Rod on Nov. 28 is an appealing option for More Than Most. But he also said there’s reason to put More Than Most away for the season and bring her back out at 3. Calhoun said discussions are ongoing with Scharbauer and the owner’s adviser, Ken Carson.
“She’s had six races,” Calhoun said. “At some point in time, she’s going to need a breather. We could turn her out for three weeks, then point for the Silverbulletday.”
The $150,000 Silverbulletday is Jan. 16 at Fair Grounds.
More Than Most is from the first crop of the A.P. Indy stallion Indygo Mountain.
