More Aspen, Reynaldothewizard get stakes wins in Dubai
More Aspen ended a 17-race losing streak with an upset win at 11-1 in Thursday’s Singspiel Stakes on turf at Meydan Racecourse in the United Arab Emirates.
The Singspiel Stakes, run at about 1 1/8 miles on turf, was one of two $150,000 races on a seven-race program. In the Dubawi Stakes at about six furlongs on dirt, Reynaldothewizard, the oldest horse in the field as a 10-year-old, won by 2 3/4 lengths over Cool Cowboy, a stakes winner at Mountaineer Park in 2014.
More Aspen and Reynaldothewizard were ridden by Richard Mullen for Satish Seemar, a locally based trainer. They also teamed up to win a minor handicap to start the program.
More Aspen was always near the front and won by a length over Big Baz, the winner of two minor stakes in England last fall. Farraaj, the 5-2 favorite with British bookmakers, led early but faded to finish last of eight.
More Aspen, a 5-year-old mare by More Than Ready, was winless since taking a minor race for 2-year-olds on the all-weather surface at Wolverhampton, England, in 2013.
Reynaldothewizard is best known for winning the $2 million Golden Shaheen for sprinters in Dubai in March 2013. In the Dubawi Stakes, Reynaldothewizard (7-2) stalked 25-1 pacesetter Let’sgoforit before taking the lead in the final sixteenth.
Cool Cowboy, who won the Sophomore Sprint Championship at Mountaineer Park in 2014, closed from last in a field of nine to finish second over Let’sgoforit. Muarrab, the 4-7 favorite, faded in the final furlong and finished fifth, ending a four-race winning streak.
