ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Saturday’s 13-race card, highlighted by a front-running score from longshot Mansetti in the $1 million King’s Plate, generated just over $17 million in all-sources wagering, the third highest in the event’s history. The Plate record is $18.1 million in 2023, a number bolstered by a large Jackpot Hi-5 carryover. This year’s card, which did not include a sizable carryover, generated the highest dollars wagered per starter of any Plate program. It also saw the debut of the “Kings & Queens Pick-3” wager that offered a $5 minimum with a 15 percent takeout. It returned $797.25. The 166th edition of the King’s Plate brought in over $4 million in wagering, while the ontrack handle was the highest since prior to the 2020 pandemic. “We were confident that Saturday would generate good numbers in large part due to a competitive King’s Plate and a deep card of racing,” said Woodbine Entertainment CEO Michael Copeland. “The action on the racetrack lived up to the billing and the atmosphere throughout the grandstand was electric. “The King’s Plate is truly the event of the summer and we want to thank our entire racing community for putting on a great show.” :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! Taylor Stakes, in which favored She Feels Pretty barely held off a closing Diamond Rain in a thrilling finish, was the second-highest wagered race of the day at $2.3 million. Mansetti gave 20-year-old apprentice Pietro Moran, the Woodbine meet’s leading rider, his first Plate win in his second ride in Canada’s most prestigious race. Mansetti, a Collected colt, earned a career high 87 Beyer Speed Figure in 1 1/4-mile Tapeta race, while boosting his bankroll to $950,560. Mansetti was the third Plate winner for trainer Kevin Attard, following Canadian champions Moira in 2022 and Catlinhergrtness last year. Attard said he plans on running Mansetti and Dewolf back in the second leg of the Canadian Triple Crown, the $400,000 Prince of Wales Stakes, a 1 3/16-mile dirt route at Fort Erie on Tuesday, Sept. 9. Mansetti’s owners, Al and Bill Ulwelling, won their first Plate. They have won the Prince of Wales twice, with Haddassah in 2021 and Velocitor in 2023.    “I plan on being there to watch Mansetti,” said Al Ulwelling. Faber had a tough trip through traffic in the Plate while closing for sixth, finishing just a nose behind Dewolf. Attard said the Ulwelling-owned Faber is unlikely to contest the Prince of Wales while eyeing the third leg of the Triple Crown, the $400,000 Breeders’ Stakes over 1 1/2 miles on the inner turf at Woodbine on Sept. 28. Faber is eligible for a first-level allowance. The next major card of racing at Woodbine is Turf Champions Day on Sept. 13, which is highlighted by the $1 million Woodbine Mile, the $500,000 Natalma Stakes, and the $500,000 Summer Stakes. Like the E.P. Taylor, the three Grade 1 events are part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series where the winner receives a fees-paid berth into a corresponding BC race. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
