Morahan, trainer, dies at 91

Bill Tallon|Jan 23, 2009

A funeral was held Friday in Orangeville, Ontario, for former trainer John Morahan, who died Wednesday at age 91.

Morahan's stars in his long career in Ontario included Momigi and Trudie Tudor.

Momigi won Sovereign Awards as Canada's champion 3-year-old filly in 1975, champion older mare in 1976, and champion turf horse (when there was no separate award for females) in 1977. Her wins included the Nettie (now E.P. Taylor) and she beat males in the Niagara and Breeders'.

Trudie Tudor, a two-time Canadian champion in the pre-Sovereign Award era, won the Princess Elizabeth in 1973 and the Woodbine Oaks in 1974

Morahan's daughter, Anne, works in the horsemen's bookkeeper's office at Woodbine.
