Moonlight d'Oro comes out of Las Virgenes victory with bone chip in knee

Moonlight d’Oro, the winner of the Grade 3 Las Virgenes Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at Santa Anita on Saturday, has been diagnosed with a bone chip in a knee that will require surgery and a three-month rest, trainer Richard Mandella said on Wednesday.

“She came out of the race with a little heat and swelling,” Mandella said. “We’re going to set up a surgery and get it taken out. She’ll probably need three months.
“We won’t know until we do the surgery. It depends on what everything looks like inside there.”
Mandella said the diagnosis was made on Tuesday.
By Medaglia d’Oro, Moonlight d’Oro closed from off the pace in the Las Virgenes Stakes at a mile, winning by 1 1/2 lengths over the stakes winner Kalypso. Moonlight d’Oro has won 2 of 4 starts and earned $163,100, all for the MyRacehorse syndicate and Spendthrift Farm.
