Monticello: Karinchak knocks off favorites in New York Sire Stakes
Karinchak, who was the second-longest shot on the board at 9-1 in Monday afternoon's $102,500 New York Sire Stakes clash for 2-year-old male trotters at Monticello Raceway, was a 1:59 2/5 winner on the front-end.
Driver Mark MacDonald hustled Karinchak to the top from the pole position and was well-rated through opening-half fractions of 31 and 1:01. Variegated (Braxten Boyd) would pull out of the pocket on the way to the 1:30 3/5 three-quarters, with favored BJM's Lil Man (Tyler Buter) grabbing the cover to sit second-over.
Variegated appeared to poke a head in front early on the last turn, but Karinchak was game on the inside and managed to repel his bid by the time they entered the lane. From there, Karinchak pulled away to prevail by two lengths, with Variegated second and BJM's Lil Man third. Seven Layer (Niko Karna) overcame a break to get fourth and Moonshot S (Jason Bartlett) rounded out the order after he made a miscue in the two-hole on the last turn.
