Monticello: Chapercraz, Onion Gum tally in New York Sire Stakes
Three-year-old male trotters were showcased on Monday afternoon at Monticello Raceway in two $57,000 New York Sire Stakes splits, and Chapercraz and Onion Gum (Jordan Stratton) would get the victories.
Chapercraz (Joe Bongiorno) led all the way from post one in the opening flight, winning in 1:56 1/5 after putting up fractions of 29 2/5, 59 2/5 and 1:27 2/5. Cecil Hanover (Mark MacDonald) was second from the pocket, half a length behind the winner, and Wild Bill Kelso (Jordan Stratton) finished in the show after going first-up from third on the way to three-quarters.
Ron Burke trains Chapercraz, a Crazy Wow gelding bred by Purple Haze Stables, for owners Burke Racing Stable LLC., Weaver Bruscemi LLC. and Phil Collura. He has three wins from 12 career starts, has earnings of $271,374 and paid $2.20 to win as part of a Burke Racing/Weaver Bruscemi/Collura-owned entry that was sent off at 1-9.
In the other grouping Some Kinda Crazy (MacDonald) led early, but Stratton brought Onion Gum out from the pocket racing to the 29 4/5 opening quarter and took charge past that station. After touching down the point, Onion Gum and Stratton backed down the tempo to just 1:00 3/5 at the half and 1:29 4/5 at three-quarters, then sprinted home in 28 3/5 to keep a first-over bid by favored The Gruffalo (Jason Bartlett) at bay by a length in a 1:58 2/5 mile. Some Kinda Crazy wound up third.
