Monomoy Girl ready to roll

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – There are no stakes on the Churchill schedule until May 23, but it might not take long for a major player to make an appearance.
Monomoy Girl is eligible for a classified allowance scheduled for the May 16 opener. The $85,000, one-mile race would make for a suitable comeback spot for the 5-year-old mare, who has gone unraced since winning the Breeders’ Cup Distaff in November 2018. An alternate spot is the $100,000 Shawnee, a new 1 1/16-mile race on May 23.
Trained by Brad Cox, Monomoy Girl has posted nine timed works since late February, with the last six coming at Keeneland.
Staggered ship-in schedule
The Churchill stable area reopens Monday with horses who have been stabled at Fair Grounds arriving first. Here’s the ship-in schedule:
May 11-13: Fair Grounds
May 14-16: Florida (Gulfstream, Tampa, training centers)
May 17-19: Oaklawn
May 20: all other locales
◗ Bravazo, best known for finishing second by a neck to Justify in the 2018 Preakness, has been retired after finishing 11th in the Oaklawn Handicap last weekend. Trained by D. Wayne Lukas for owner-breeder Calumet Farm, the 5-year-old horse by Awesome Again won 3 of 22 starts for earnings of $2,033,195.
