Monmouth Oaks winner Shahama goes next in Cotillion

The 3-year-old filly Shahama is headed back to Grade 1 competition after winning the Grade 3 Monmouth Oaks on July 31.
Shahama will make her next start in the $1 million Cotillion Stakes on Sept. 24 at Parx Racing, trainer Todd Pletcher said in a text message Wednesday. Pletcher also trains Nest, the leader of the 3-year-old filly dirt-route division after airing in the Coaching Club American Oaks and finishing second in the Belmont Stakes and in the Kentucky Oaks.

Shahama also raced in the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks, her North American debut, finishing a respectable sixth after breaking from post 13 and racing from farther off the pace than she probably prefers. Shahama, a Munnings filly owned KHK Racing, was bred in Kentucky but made her first three starts, all wins, in Dubai. She was second in the Mother Goose at Belmont before winning the 1 1/16-mile Monmouth Oaks by 2 1/2 lengths, earning a 92 Beyer Speed Figure.
