Monmouth: Mr. Umphrey hangs on

Mr. Umphrey ($5.40) held off Maddy's Lion by a half-length to win the $70,000 Longfellow Stakes at Monmouth Park.

Ridden by Eddie Castro, Mr. Umphrey challenged pacesetter Praying for Cash nearing the quarter pole, drew well clear in deep stretch, and had enough left to withstand a late bid by Maddy's Lion. Callmetony, the 6-5 favorite, was third. Mr. Umphrey, trained by Rick Dutrow, ran six furlongs in 1:09.41.
