Monmouth: Jazzy Idea ruins Stopshoppingmaria's comeback in the Crank It Up

Ira Kaplan|Jun 09, 2012

Score one for recency over class in the $60,800 Crank It Up Stakes at Monmouth Park on Saturday. Making her fifth start of the year, Jazzy Idea charged past the comebacking Stopshoppingmaria in deep stretch to win the 5 ½-furlong turf race for 3-year-old fillies by three-quarters of a length.

Stopshoppingmaria looked like a winner until deep stretch in her first start since running second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf last November. Under Joe Bravo, she stalked the pace of longshot Allwewantforxmas through fractions of 21.99 and 44.34 on a firm course, opened up in midstretch, but felt the effects of her seven-month layoff in the final yards. She ended up 1 ¾ lengths ahead of Sensible Lady, who finished third in the field of six.

Jazzy Idea improved her record this year to 3 wins and 2 seconds in 5 starts, thanks in part to a patient ride by Eddie Trujillo. Jazzy Idea trailed for about the first half-mile of the race before kicking in and running down Stopshoppingmaria. A Great Notion filly owned, bred and trained by Edwin Merryman, Jazzy Idea covered the 5 ½ furlongs in 1:01.49 and paid $7.20.
