Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J., has canceled its 4th of July card just hours before it was set to begin, another casualty of the heat wave that has disrupted racing throughout the U.S. over the past week.
In an announcement on Saturday morning, Monmouth cited “excessive heat” for the cancellation. An extreme heat warning for the area is in effect until Saturday night, with high temperatures forecast for 95 degrees and the heat index pushing past 100 degrees.
Monmouth said that the eight races scheduled for Saturday’s card will be added to the overnight for the Friday, July 10, card.
Monmouth also canceled its Friday card due to the heat wave. The track said that it plans to go ahead with its July 5 card. Admission will be free.
