Monmouth cancels Friday card due to extreme heat

Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J., has canceled its Friday card because of the extreme heat that is gripping the Midwest and Eastern seaboard in the run-up to the three-day July 4 weekend, the track said on Wednesday.
Monmouth had a six-race card scheduled for Friday, a federal holiday. The races are being added to the Sunday card as extras. The Sunday card is being drawn on Wednesday morning.
New Jersey is under an “extreme heat advisory” through Friday, but temperatures are expected to drop on Saturday, July 4. Monmouth is offering free admission on both Saturday and Sunday.
The extreme heat has led tracks throughout the country to modify their schedules or cancel race cards outright. In the Midwest, the so-called “heat dome” is expected to linger throughout the weekend.
