OLDSMAR, Fla. – Mongolian Saturday isn’t coming to Tampa Bay Downs after all, after the 2015 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint winner missed a scheduled workout Sunday due to body soreness, according to Santiago Aragon, assistant to trainer Enebish Ganbat. Mongolian Saturday had been nominated to the $100,000 Turf Dash, a five-furlong turf sprint for 4-year-olds and up here Jan. 9, but it would have been a tough ask. The horse, owned by the Mongolian Stable, had traveled overseas for the Group 1 Hong Kong Sprint at Sha Tin on Dec. 13, finishing fifth and snapping a string of 11 consecutive finishes in the money. “We were actually planning on working today, but we’re having some issues, so I think we’re going to skip this race and give him a little rest,” Aragon said. “He doesn’t have any injuries. The trip just made him sore. We need his body at 100 percent, so we’re just going to wait.” Aragon said Mongolian Saturday will be pointed toward the $75,000 Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint for 4-year-olds and up at five furlongs Feb. 6. That race will serve as a prep for the $1 million, Group 1 Al Quoz Sprint, a turf dash at about five furlongs on the Dubai World Cup card March 26 at Meydan. Mongolian Saturday, a gelding by Any Given Saturday, made 11 starts as a 5-year-old in 2015, winning three times. He scored a 15-1 upset in the BC Turf Sprint on Oct. 31 at Keeneland after running second in the Grade 3 Woodford Stakes and the Grade 3 Turf Monster Handicap. Among the other top horses nominated to the Turf Dash are Richies Sweetheart, Bold Thunder, Ancil, and Fast Flying Rumor. Richies Sweetheart would be facing males after winning the $80,000 Lightning City Stakes against females here Dec. 19 for trainer Larry Rivelli. It was her third stakes win of 2015, following scores in the $200,000 Turf Amazon Handicap at Parx in September and the $78,900 Brandywine Stakes at Indiana Grand in July. “We’re entering, and it’s about 50-50 that we run,” Rivelli said. “She’s ready, I just don’t want to overmatch her. If the race comes up where it favors her and there aren’t a lot of other speed horses, I’ll probably run her.” Bold Thunder won the 2015 Turf Dash in a course-record time of 54.63 seconds, and Ancil won the event in 2014. Fast Flying Rumor scored a 17-1 upset in the $56,400 Select Stakes at Monmouth Park in June before coming down with a case of the thumps, or spasms of the diaphragm similar to hiccups that are usually caused by dehydration and low levels of electrolytes. He returned to win the local prep for the Turf Dash, an optional $100,000 claimer here Dec. 11, for trainer Gerald Bennett.
