Money'soncharlotte streaking into Beldame

ELMONT, N.Y. – Unbeaten in four starts this year, Money’soncharlotte will put her streak to the test in the Grade 1, $400,000 Beldame Stakes next Saturday at Belmont Park.
Trained by Kelly Breen for owner George Hall, Money’soncharlotte won two of her first three career starts, including a maiden race at Belmont in October 2014 and a minor stakes at Gulfstream Park West. Over the next two years, Money’soncharlotte went just 1 for 14.
This year, the daughter of Mizzen Mast won an allowance race at Parx Racing in April, the Lady’s Secret and Grade 3 Molly Pitcher stakes at Monmouth in July, and, most recently, the $200,000 Lady Jacqueline Stakes at Thistledown last month.
Breen said Money’soncharlotte had some peculiarities that may have prevented her from reaching her potential earlier in her career.
“We tried to learn from her,” Breen said. “She can be a little finicky with her feed how she trains. Right now, we’ve got her in a good zone.”

In her training, Money’soncharlotte showed that she was quick. But Breen said she wouldn’t show that same speed in the afternoon. Throughout her four-race win streak, she has been on or close to the pace.
“There were times I got quite frustrated,” Breen said. “She’d show early speed and then take herself out of the race. I didn’t get it. We changed some things around, and she’s gotten back on the bridle and doing things a little better.”
Though Paco Lopez has been aboard for Money’soncharlotte’s last three wins, Breen said John Velazquez will ride her in the Beldame.
As of Friday, the only four confirmed Beldame starters were Elate, Eskenformoney, Money’soncharlotte, and Verve’s Tale. Bishop’s Pond and Line of Best Fit were possible.
