OLDSMAR, Fla. – Trainer Rohan Crichton said he is leaning toward running The Money Monster in the Grade 2, $400,000 Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream Park on March 4 following the undefeated colt’s victory last Saturday in the $53,500 Pasco Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs. Crichton, who shares ownership of the Majestic Warrior colt with Cheryl Baker, said he also will consider the Grade 3, $250,000 Sam F. Davis Stakes here Feb. 11 for The Money Monster, though that might be coming back a bit too quickly. The Money Monster, ridden by Edgard Zayas, prompted the pace and advanced powerfully along the rail to win a stretch battle by half a length over Chance of Luck in the Pasco. The Money Monster earned a 70 Beyer Speed Figure after finishing the seven-furlong test in 1:24.04 on a fast track. The Fountain of Youth and Sam F. Davis both cover 1 1/16 miles, and Crichton said he thinks The Money Monster can handle the added distance. “I can’t wait to go two turns,” Crichton said. “We’ve never really gotten to the bottom of him. He’s just the kind of horse who likes to fight.” The Money Monster was a bargain $6,500 purchase at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. auction of 2-year-olds in training last April. He’s won both of his starts, having taken a $30,000 maiden special weight sprint by 1 3/4 lengths at his Gulfstream Park West base in November. Chance of Luck, a son of Skipshot trained by leading local trainer Gerald Bennett, endured a wide trip in the Pasco, his first loss in three starts. He romped in a $40,000 maiden claimer at Laurel Park in October before taking the $60,000 Inaugural Stakes here last month. Bennett said he will nominate Chance of Luck to the Sam F. Davis but might point the horse to a starter allowance at Gulfstream Park instead. Bennett won the $86,000 Gasparilla Stakes here last Saturday with R Angel Katelyn, who survived a stewards’ inquiry after repeatedly veering out in the stretch and causing runner-up Jumby Bay to check. R Angel Katelyn won by 1 3/4 lengths and finished in 1:23.94 to post a faster time than the boys in the Pasco. She earned a 71 Beyer. Bennett said R Angel Katelyn will be considered for the $100,000 Suncoast Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at one mile and 40 yards here Feb. 11. R Angel Katelyn, a daughter of High Cotton owned by Averill Racing LLC and CCF Racing Stable, has four wins and a runner-up finish in five career starts for $207,120 in earnings. She won the $100,000 Juvenile Filly Sprint against Florida-breds at Gulfstream Park West in November before romping by 3 1/2 lengths in the $89,000 Sandpiper Stakes here Dec. 3. Bennett also finished second with Royal Jewely in the $50,000 Wayward Lass Stakes here last Saturday and said that 5-year-old stakes-winning mare likely will get a short rest after losing a shoe in the race. Royal Jewely finished 2 1/2 lengths behind the Chris Block-trained No Fault of Mine, who earned a long-overdue first stakes victory. No Fault of Mine had lost her previous eight stakes races, including six graded events. She was the runner-up in the Grade 2 Golden Rod Stakes as a juvenile in 2014 and in the Grade 3 Arlington Matron last May. She also finished second in the Minaret Stakes here last February and in the One Dreamer Stakes at Kentucky Downs last September. Assistant trainer Tony Reinstedler said the $50,000 Minaret Stakes, a six-furlong sprint for older fillies and mares here Feb. 18, is a possibility for No Fault of Mine. High-priced 3-year-olds in route It’s not too late for maiden 3-year-olds to jump onto the Kentucky Derby trail, and trainer Todd Pletcher has two high-priced horses looking to do just that in the seventh race on Wednesday’s 10-race card. Always Dreaming, a $350,000 purchase as a yearling at Keeneland in September 2015, is tabbed as the 7-5 morning-line favorite in the $22,500 maiden special weight race, which covers one mile and 40 yards and drew a field of nine 3-year-olds. Pletcher also will debut Watch Your Words, who sold for $675,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale of select yearlings in August 2015. Always Dreaming, a Bodemeister colt owned by a partnership that includes MeB Racing Stables, Viola Racing Stables, and St Elias Stables, has made two starts, most recently a runner-up finish, beaten a neck by Blame Will, in a rich maiden special weight race at Saratoga last August. Always Dreaming scored an 88 Beyer Speed Figure for the effort. Watch Your Words, an Arch colt owned by St Elias Stables, debuts off a steady series of drills at Palm Beach Downs and is 4-1 on the morning line. The field also includes Frontliner, a Harlan’s Holiday colt trained by Bill Mott who will be making his debut for breeder and owner Juddmonte Farms after training steadily at Payson Park. The race could produce starters for the Grade 3, $250,000 Sam F. Davis Stakes here Feb. 11 and perhaps the Grade 2, $350,000 Tampa Bay Derby here March 11. Both stakes races offer Kentucky Derby qualifying points.
