Mondaymorningblues showing precocity for Miller
ARCADIA, Calif. – The 2-year-old filly Mondaymorningblues has accomplished enough in recent training to leave trainer Peter Miller hopeful that she can win her debut in a maiden special weight race at 4 1/2 furlongs in Thursday’s second race at Santa Anita.
Owned by Gary Barber, Mondaymorningblues was purchased for $70,000 at the Keeneland September yearling sale last year. Mondaymorningblues began workouts in late March and has had six recorded works at the San Luis Rey Downs training center in northern San Diego county, where Miller keeps the majority of his horses.
“She acts like she can run,” Miller said. “She has some speed.”
Asked if Mondaymorningblues can win, Miller was optimistic.
“If there are no freaks or monsters in there, I think she can,” Miller said.
The maiden race is the first open race for 2-year-old fillies in Southern California this year and drew a field of 11. The race will have a safety limit of eight starters.
Two runners have started: Ismelucky and Princess Fran were second and fifth in a maiden race for California-bred 2-year-old fillies May 4.
The first-time starter Cause We Are Loyal is stuck on the also-eligible list. Trained by Doug O’Neill for Paul and Zillah Reddam, Cause We Are Loyal was purchased for $120,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Florida March sale of 2-year-olds this year.
