Mom's On Strike rallies to win Albert M. Stall Memorial Stakes

NEW ORLEANS – Mom’s On Strike won her fourth race in a row Saturday, capturing the $75,000 Albert M. Stall Memorial Stakes by 1 1/2 lengths with a powerful late rally.
Mom’s On Strike raced between horses in seventh around the first turn and down the backstretch, and, still several lengths behind the pacesetting I’m Betty G. through a slow half-mile in 49.79 seconds, she appeared to have her work cut out for her. But jockey Adam Beschizza got to work on the mare with three furlongs still to race, Mom’s On Strike found her best stride after turning for home, and she mowed down the leaders while racing far out onto the firm Fair Grounds turf course.
“She takes a bit of time to get going, but when she gets going, she really goes well,” Beschizza said. “She’s definitely improving, and she’s really come into her own.”
Mom’s On Strike still had several lengths to find a furlong out, and she ran her final half-furlong in well under six seconds to stop the timer in 1:43.82 for about 1 1/16 miles. Vagabond Princess, a 46-1 shot, pressed the pace and finished best of the rest for second, while I’m Betty G., as usual, lost ground from the stretch call to the wire, dead-heating with Five Hearts for third.
Joe Sharp trains Mom’s On Strike for owners Carl Moore and Brad Grady. A 5-year-old mare by First Dude and out of Mom’s Deputy, by War Chant, Mom’s On Strike’s record stands at 5-4-1 from 13 races, and if she holds this form or continues to improve, there might well be a graded stakes race with her name on it out there this year.
