Mom's Law chases down rivals to upset Jack Betta Be Rite Stakes

Mom’s Law upset the 2013 Jack Betta Be Rite Stakes at Finger Lakes at 24-1. She won the race again Friday, this time at 16-1.
Mom’s Law, now 6, was unhurried while lagging far back in last position early in the $50,000 Jack Betta Be Rite, a 1 1/16-mile race for New York-bred fillies and mares. She caught the field entering the stretch, came between horses, and out-finished the 2-1 favorite Carameaway to win by 1 1/4 lengths.
Carameaway tracked the pacesetting Atlantic’s Smile though realistic fractions of 23.55 seconds and 47.48, challenged from the outside in upper stretch, and continued willingly to be second-best. Atlantic’s Smile was third, two lengths farther back.
Smitten by Gold, also 2-1, raced in early contention along the inside, lodged her bid three wide into the stretch, but lacked the needed rally and finished fourth.
Miss Da Point finished fifth at 3-1 in the six-horse field. She was unhurried while outrun early and lodged a bid along the inside into the stretch but weakened.
Mom’s Law, the longest price in the field, paid $35.80. The $2 exacta with Carameaway returned $175. Mom’s Law was timed in 1:45.94 after a mile in 1:39.20 and six furlongs in 1:12.54. She was ridden by Luis Perez.
Mom’s Law now is 8 for 31 in her career with earnings of $207,038. She was bred and is trained by Michael Lecesse and is owned by Lecesse and Purple Haze Stables.
Mom’s Law had won two allowance races in 16 starts since winning the 2013 Jack Betta Be Rite.
