Mokat retired, will be bred to Medaglia d'Oro

ARCADIA, Calif. – Mokat, a Grade 2 winner that occasionally ranked among the top grass fillies in California, has been retired from racing, trainer Richard Baltas said this week.
The 5-year-old mare, winner of the San Clemente Handicap in 2016 at Del Mar and runner-up in the Grade 2 Royal Heroine in 2017 at Santa Anita, was intended to race this year at age 5. However, recurring ankle problems flared up again after she worked Jan. 13 at Santa Anita, and Baltas called off the comeback.
“She’s definitely retired,” Baltas said, adding that plans call for Mokat to be bred to Medaglia d’Oro this spring and sold at auction this fall.
Mokat, from the first crop of Uncle Mo, won two races and $380,085 from 15 starts. In addition to winning the San Clemente and placing in the Royal Heroine, Mokat finished second in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Oaks and third in the Grade 3 Santa Ysabel at Santa Anita in 2016, and second in the Grade 3 Jimmy Durante at Del Mar in 2015.
Mokat is owned by JK Racing Stable LLC.
