Moira takes Princess Elizabeth with inside rally

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Moira made quite a splash when debuting in Saturday’s $250,800 Princess Elizabeth Stakes at Woodbine, winning the 1 1/16-mile route for Canadian-bred 2-year-old fillies easily under Justin Stein.

Moira saved ground near the rear of the 10-horse field early, as Mo Touring set quick fractions with Lois Len stalking in second.

Moira ($10.60) began to mount an inside rally on the far turn before following stablemate Souper Flashy entering the stretch. Souper Flashy made the lead near the eighth pole, but was promptly overtaken by Moira, who drew off to prevail by 4 1/4 lengths, in a time of 1:44.63.

Souper Flashy finished second, giving trainer Kevin Attard a sweep of the top two positions. She was followed by Intro, Baksheesh, Swinging Mandy, Mo Touring, Keep It Neat, Into Touring, Lois Len, and Broken Proposal.

“She handled everything really well,” Stein said. “She was just galloping around there on the backside. She was within herself, really relaxed. She was right there for me, like a seasoned runner. I moved her around where I needed to be. I just waited for the seam to open at the head of the lane. I had so much horse.”

A $150,000 yearling purchase by Ghostzapper, Moira earned $150,000 for the partnership of X-Men Racing, Madaket Stables, and SF Racing.

Attard said he bypassed a recent maiden special with Moira because it was too close to the Princess Elizabeth, and had the confidence to debut her in the historic event.

“She showed a lot of talent,” Attard said. “I really liked her for a long time.”
