Mohawk: Trixton sets track record in Goodtimes Final

Derick Giwner Trixton cruised home to a 1:51 3/5 record-setting win.

Trixton set a track, stakes and Canadian record in capturing the $272,100 Goodtimes final at Mohawk on Saturday night. The son of Muscle Hill, sent off as the prohibitive 1-9 betting favorite, floated out of the gate and allowed others to get to the front first then wound up parked through a :55 opening half before securing the top. Once on the lead it was another one-horse race for the Jimmy Takter-trained and driven colt. Trixton blasted through three-quarters in 1:22 4/5 and then opened ground through the stretch on his way to a 1:51 3/5 effort.

“He had to work hard,” said Takter following the race, “But great horses can overcome.”

Trixton defeated Il Sogno Dream and Harper Blue Chip for his fifth victory in six starts in 2014. Brixton Medical and Christina Takter own the colt that is rapidly becoming a favorite for this year’s Hambletonian.

“He’ll get a couple of weeks off and then he’ll go in the Stanley Dancer at the Meadowlands,” said Takter.

Classic Martine ended the 11-race winning streak of Perfect Alliance in taking the $266,000 Armbro Flight final. Tim Tetrick drove the four-year-old mare to the front with an alert leave looking to sit behind the 1-2 favorite Perfect Alliance. “I thought I was in good shape and would give up the lead to Yannick (Gingras behind Perfect Alliance) but I had to sit third which was fine,” said Tetrick.

Classic Martine watched as first Bee A Magician controlled the quarter in :27 and then yielded to Perfect Alliance three-eighths into the race. Perfect Alliance appeared to control the pace nicely with fractions of :56 and 1:24 but late in the stretch she became leg weary and Classic Martine found room in midstretch and charged by to win in 1:52 1/5, just one fifth off the stakes record. Trained by Chris Oakes, Classic Martine won for the fourth time in five tries in 2014 as a 9-2 third choice in the field.

Perfect Alliance finished second with Rockin With Dewey third as Bee A Magician finished off the board for just the second time in her brilliant career.
