Mohawk: Bee A Magician overpowers them in Armbro Flighti

The C$272,000 Armbro Flight Stakes at Mohawk racetrack on Saturday night turned into a show of absolute domination by 2013 Horse of the Year Bee A Magician.

The Nifty Norman-trained Bee A Magician followed last week’s Canadian record mile with a near instant replay as she powered away from her foes first over on the final turn en route to a stakes record 1:51 4/5 blowout win.

Bee A Magician was out and moving in third at the half, timed in a pedestrian 56 4/5 and blew right by early leader Classic Martine with ease. That spelled game over for her overmatched foes and she clicked the three-quarters off in 1:24 2/5 then motored down the lane all alone.

As the Kadabra mare’s foes scrapped for minor awards, Bee A Magcian’s regular driver Brian Sears sat motionless. At the wire she was seven lengths the best seemingly having expended little effort.

The heavy favorite returned $2.60 to win and topped a $24.90 exacta with Charmed Life, who closed from far back for second. Classic Martine, the early pacesetter, finished third.

Sears said that after last week’s superb first-over effort he saw no reason to switch strategy. “She raced so good last week that I wasn’t going to move her hard to the front,” he explained in the winner’s circle. “I got away in a first-over position and she did the rest.”

Norman noted that his star trotting mare has stayed sharp all year. “She’s been in a really good little groove so I haven’t been doing much with her between races.

“Yeah, I think so,” he replied matter-of-factly when asked if she will continue to race past 2015. He added that she will likely get about a month off before racing next at The Meadowlands.

The victory by Bee A Magician was her sixth in seven starts this year for owners Melvin Hartman, Herb Liverman and David McDuffee. She moved over $2.2 million in career earnings with the win.
